In this tome, it is clear Salisbury indulges his love for illustration and at the same time treats us to some fascinating, and for many, unknown picture books. Note the title: 1oo GREAT Children’s Picture Books, not 100 BEST Children’s Picture Books. His latest, 100 Great Children’s Picture Books (Laurence King) was released earlier this year. Martin Salisbury has several books about children’s book illustration under his belt already: Illustrating Children’s Books and Play Pen (unfortunately now out of print) and Children’s Picture Books: the Art of Visual Storytelling, with Morag Styles. You can read more about his research here. There he leads the MA in Children’s Illustration course, as well as being the Director of the Centre for Children’s Book Studies. Martin Salisbury is Professor of Illustration at Anglia Rushkin University. If you are interested in learning about children’s book illustration, or if you are simply an admirer of children’s book illustration, there is one person’s books that you should most definitely seek out, and that is Martin Salisbury’s.
